Lignin Molar Mass Estimation by Dispersion Analysis

This study evaluated Taylor Dispersion Analysis (TDA) as a route to estimating the molar mass of lignin, whose complex, heterogeneous structure makes accurate molar-mass determination difficult for industrial applications. Flow Induced Dispersion Analysis (FIDA), a TDA-based method, was used to measure the average hydrodynamic radii of several lignin species, and calibration related these dispersion measurements to molar mass. The FIDA results were benchmarked against size-exclusion chromatography and validated against DOSY NMR spectroscopy. The authors note that accuracy is limited by the variability of lignin's intrinsic fluorescence, on which the detection relies.
